As announced earlier, NCT and SMROOKIES members Kun, Ten, Winwin, Lucas, Hendery, Xiaojun and Yangyang will be debuting in the new Chinese boy group WayV, and since there is a lot of confusion around the topic, we decided to share the minimal amount of info we have on the situation which is for a big part theory and speculation, so we ask you to take everything with a grain of salt.
1. The name 'WayV’ consists of two components, ‘Way’ seems to stem from a romanization of the character 威, which is part of the phrase ‘NCT Vision 威神’ when read aloud yet literally translated to ‘Powerful God’. The ‘V’ represents ‘Vision’.
2. This group is officially not under SM Entertainment, but under a label by the name of ‘Label V’. Presumably this is a sister label either fully or partially under the control of SM Entertainment, and this is speculated to be a way for SM to avoid potential political tensions between China and Korea interfering with the promotion of WayV.
3. Nowhere in the announcement has there been a mention of a ‘unit’ or NCT in general. We don’t know what this means, or if this is a meaningful observation at all. But WayV is not said to be an NCT unit so far.
As said before, considering the small amount of information we have received on the establishment of the group so far we can’t make any solid conclusions in this regard. We ask you to once again be weary of any rumors and wait for further official announcements from either SM Entertainment or the group’s new label. Until then, please support WayV!
